Nothing is as important to a computer user as the operating system they choose. Everything from RAM to CPUs is secondary, in terms of usability and when compared to an operating system. That’s because your OS will decide how you interact with everything else a computer has to offer. Keeping that in mind, here are four popular operating systems you may wish to consider.
Windows
Despite many challenges over the years, Windows remains the most popular OS on the planet. This means it also provides the greatest amount of compatibility with software and hardware that’s already out there.
Many people will go with Windows for their OS simply because of this. It’s what most people are used to and it works with everything they’re accustomed to.
That being said, many people feel that Windows computers are inferior to those made by Mac. Also, software and hardware isn’t the only thing that works better for Windows. Malware does too.
Mac OS X
Apple has become synonymous with trendy technology, thanks to both Mac OS X and the fancy gadgets they make that so many of us love.
This isn’t all talk though. Mac OS X devices like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro offer a lot to be excited about (minus the price tag). Mac OS X can also run Windows applications (e.g. Microsoft Office), so compatibility isn’t much of an issue.
Again, if you want these advantages, expect to spend north of $1,000. Furthermore, because it’s a younger system, Mac OS X isn’t always a great choice for gamers.
Chrome OS
Anything Google does deserve serious consideration. Chrome OS, their new operating system, is already finding fans. It’s basically just an OS version of their Chrome web browser, with some desktop functions added in.
Chromebooks are remarkably cheap and very easy to use. However, they can’t run Windows applications and even Linux-based software won’t run unless you put the computer into developer mode and know how to “hack†it after that.
If you use Chrome to surf the web and that’s basically all you’re interested in, Chrome OS is a smart choice.
Desktop Linux
With a new focus on web-based applications, traditional desktop Linux is seeing new attention. It supports both Chrome and Mozilla Firefox and many companies make computers that support it, including Dell.
Still, Linux makes the most sense for tech-junkies who love its simplicity and actually have plans for this specific operating system.

With many of our older posts, we simply don’t have a way of looking back to see the author – most of the newer articles, and revisions to older articles come from me however.
