Picking a domain name should not be something that its taken lightly. It should be something that makes you a long time to figure out. Some people pay a lot of money for their domain name, and the ease of your success may hinge on it.
One that is easy to spell
Picking a domain name that is easy to spell is not as much of a problem if you have Google and Google suggestions on your side, but your website has to be pretty popular at that point to gain any benefit. So, your best bet is to have a website name that is easy to spell.
One that spells the way it is said
When your website is mentioned on the radio or from person to person, you want people to be able to figure it out from there. You need to make sure people can go home and type it in and get it right the first time.
One that is short
It is another convenience thing. It is possible to have a popular website with a long name, but there are very few of them. Even ones with longer names are easier to spell out such as “Photobucket†and “AdultFriendFinder.†But, the most famous names are only five or six letters.
One that does not limit what your website is all about
If you are setting up a site, then you want a domain name that does then restrict your choices. For example, can you imagine if you set up a website to sell VHS films and you had VHS in the domain name? It would not stand you in excellent stead these days.
One that is memorable
A memorable website name is great if you can come up with one that indeed works. “FunkyPigeon†or “Snapfish.â€
One that is not too similar to your competition
If you sell DVD media, then a domain name such as “Plays†is too close to the “Play†website name, and the same problem would apply if you named your domain name “Amazons.†Too close to the competition is a bad idea.
Stick with dot com
It is right in America, and if you are in Britain then use .co.uk, and if you are in France then use Fr (you get the idea).
Do not use hyphens or numbers
They are just a terrible idea when it comes to website domain names. Avoid them at all costs or suffer the consequences.
