Dedicate yourself to practicing these backup tactics and never lose your data again.

In an ideal world, technology is 110 percent infallible and your data is never in danger. But we live in the real world, where technology is often more like HAL, the psychotic computer from Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. In other words, there’s a good chance you’ll be locked out of your own spaceship. If you don’t have a spaceship, there’s an even better chance your data will become corrupted, or even lost forever…
Unless you backup regularly, using the right backup strategies. But what are the right strategies?

To ensure the safety of your irreplaceable information, keep the following tips in mind:
  • A backup to the same hard disk on which your live data resides is never a good idea, even if the backup is on a separate partition. Sure, this method might get you out of a jam once in a while, but what if you your hard drive fails entirely? To avoid this problem, get a second hard drive installed on your server and use it solely for backups.
  • RAID does more than kill bugs dead. Without going into a lot of technical detail, mirrored RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) writes all your data to two or more disks at the same time. If one fails, another can take over. While this does offer some security, your data is still subject to hardware failure, viral infestation and the like.
  • The hands-down best way to protect your data is to store it offsite. Some dedicated server providers offer this service for an extra fee, but, depending on the amount of data you have, it may be practical to simply download the data to your own system and then store it on removable media for offsite storage. Alternately, you can copy the data to another, physically separate, server.

Backup

Backup is all about redundancy. For maximum data security, employ a couple different backup methods. You might, for instance, combine hardware RAID with offsite backups – not only will your data be reasonably safe, you’ll recover from disasters much more quickly.
Finally, the best-planned, most redundant backup system in the world is no good if you don’t back up your data on a daily basis. Why not take the vagaries of memory and personal schedules out of the equation?
There are several automated backup solutions available that can tirelessly and punctually protect your valuable data. Get your hands on one and free your mind for other, more profitable, tasks…like building your business.
